Suimeisō Hotel・水明荘

2020.02.13 (Thu)

The Suimeisō Hotel is a government managed lodging facility conveniently located in the Tōgō Onsen area. It offers reasonably priced rooms, traditional Japanese cuisine, and views of Tōgō Lake from its outdoor onsen hot springs and some rooms. When visiting Yurihama, the Suimeisō Hotel is an excellent pick for exploring Togo Lake’s onsen spots, and as a travel stop between attractions in Eastern and Western Tottori.

Make reservations online or by calling: 0858-32-0411 (Japanese)

Access:

1. Via Yonago Airport or Tottori Airport:

The Suimeisō Hotel is a five-minute walk from JR Matsuzaki station. To reach the station from Yonago Airport, ride the JR Sakai Line and transfer to the JR Sanin Main Line until Matsuzaki, a local stop. From Tottori Airport, simply take an airport limousine bus to Matsuzaki station.

2. Via train (Osaka station or Okayama station):

Take the Super Hakuto express train to Kurayoshi station, then ride a local train to Matsuzaki station. Walk five minutes to the Suimeisō Hotel.

3. Via highway bus (Osaka, Hiroshima, or Okayama):

Several highway buses run to Kurayoshi station from major cities in the region. You can then take a local train to Matsuzaki station, then walk to the hotel.

Igisu・いぎす

2020.01.30 (Thu)

Photo by the official website of Tottori Prefecture

Have you ever heard of “igisu”? Igisu is a local cuisine eaten mainly in central Tottori. It has the texture of jelly paste and tastes like the ocean. It is quite a unique food, and I’m told it’s unfamiliar and a bit strange to people from outside the prefecture.

Igisu appears at special occasions like New Year’s and Buddhist memorial services. It is also eaten as part of the vegetarian cuisine derived from the diet of Buddhist monks (called shōjin-ryōri).

Igisu is made from “igisu grass”, a type of reddish seaweed that grows near the seashore. To make igisu, simply dry igisu grass in the sun and rehydrate it. Then, stir it in a pot under low heat until it dissolves. Finally, place it into a container until it naturally hardens with a jelly-like appearance. Igisu is eaten with shoyu and sesame seeds.

Visitors to Tottori should try this unique local specialty! Look for it in area supermarkets, train station shops, or anywhere local products are sold.

More about Minato Shrine・湊神社について

2020.01.16 (Thu)

Image from Google Maps, in accordance with its Fair Use Policy

Minato Shrine is located in the Hashizu district of Yurihama.

Hundreds of years ago, Hashizu was once used as a boat harbor. Like many of the other shrines in the area, Minato Shrine was often visited to worship for maritime safety. Since the Tenbun period (1532~1555) to the first year of the Hōei period (1704), various daimyō feudal lords who controlled the region contributed donations to the shrine.

The shrine is still active today, most notably hosting the annual Minato Shrine Festival every fall.
