2015.09.30 (Wed)

Rishichi Nagasemura was only 16 when he became a sailor and was hired on the boat Eirikimaru” in Settsu (present-day northern Osaka and southern Hyogo) in 1849. The following year, during one of his return voyages from Edo, his boat met a storm and Rishichi drifted until he was rescued by Americans. He returned with them to America, where he had the experience of seeing the gold rush. Three years after the famous Manjuro Nahahama returned from his voyages, Rishichi returned to Japan in 1854.
