Rishichi Nagasemura was only 16 when he became a sailor and was hired on the boat Eirikimaru” in Settsu (present-day northern Osaka and southern Hyogo) in 1849. The following year, during one of his return voyages from Edo, his boat met a storm and Rishichi drifted until he was rescued by Americans.
