Big Catch Flags

2015.06.23 (Tue)

These tai-ryou, or big catch, fishing flags are raised to pray for a safe sea voyage and, literally, a big catch. The dynamic site of the ships out at sea, each with their own elaborate design, fills the air with a lively exuberance. It was once a custom to raise these flags for festivals including the Hina Matsuri, summer festivals, and autumn festivals.
