Kawaguchi Castle was built during the Nanboku-chō (Northern and Southern Courts) period as a natural stronghold at the top of the mountain by the Yamana clan, then the Houki region’s military governor. It became the site of a hard-fought battle during the Warring States period. Now, traces of the castle remain on the towering cliffs of the mountain. The forests and plains between the southern side of JR Tomari station and the remains of Kawaguchi Castle have been used as multipurpose forest reserve since 1991, complete with a walking trail.
