Born in Yurihama’s Betsusho district, Shōroku Chikuma graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1911 before working as a professor of art history and design at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts (now Kyoto City Dohda Senior High School of Arts). In 1926, he opened Shōwa Design and Craft Research Establishment, a private school where he devoted himself to teaching three-dimensional design. His creations include Betsusho’s Chōei Temple’s ceiling piece “Daikumo-ryo” and Tōgō Junior High’s “Nihon Kaku-jidai Ishou Hyoushi Zuan.
