Born in Yurihama’s Betsusho district, Shōroku Chikuma graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1911 before working as a professor of art history and design at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts (now Kyoto City Dohda Senior High School of Arts). In 1926, he opened Shōwa Design and Craft Research Establishment, a private school where he devoted himself to teaching three-dimensional design. His creations include Betsusho’s Chōei Temple’s ceiling piece “Daikumo-ryo” and Tōgō Junior High’s “Nihon Kaku-jidai Ishou Hyoushi Zuan.

 

1883(明治16)年に別所(湯梨浜町別所)に生まれ、1911(明治44)年東京美術学校(現東京芸術大学)卒業後、京都市立美術工芸学校教諭として、図案学や美術史などを担任。1926(昭和1)年には、私塾「昭和図案工芸研究所」を開設、立体図案の大家として指導に専念しました。作品には、別所の長栄寺絵天井「大雲龍」、東郷中学校「日本各時代意匠表紙図案」。
