During a famine in ancient times, the people in the surrounding areas enshrined this Jizo statue in Sairen temple (link – JP) in Hashizu and prayed to it for help. In the main temple you can see two large paintings of Buddhist heaven and hell. On the night of July 27 (23 July in the lunar calendar), the villagers perform the traditional “Chamachi dance” (link – JP) in front of the Jizo statue, to comfort the souls of those who passed away in the past year.
