Shitori Shrine 倭文神社

2014.05.29 (Thu)

This is the oldest and most important shrine of the old Hōki region (now Western Tottori), and is widely believed to house a goddess of safe birth. According to legend, the goddess Princess Shitateru (Shitateru-hime-no-mikoto), daughter of the god of the underworld and ruler of Izumo, Lord Ōkuni (Ōkuninushi-no-mikoto), travelled from Izumo to this area and made it her home. The name of the shrine comes from the main industry of the area at the time, a woven fabric called Shizuori (now Shitori). The shrine’s annual festival on 1 May is nicknamed “Ichinomiya-san”.
