takahama kofun

This is the largest and most important burial mound found at the Takahama excavation site at Nagase. Inside the main stone sarcophagus, the nearly perfect remains of an adult woman were found. At the time, they were thought to possibly be the remains of Himiko, an ancient shaman queen and important character in Japanese history. The remains have been transferred to the south-east side of the ruins.
